From the trunk of my car to living the American Dream
I’m originally from L.A. (Lower Alabama!).
I grew up very poor on welfare. There were 7 kids crammed in a little 600 square foot shack with a roof that was so bad, we had to get out the pots and pans to catch the leaks when it rained. And it rained a lot in Mobile, Alabama!
My little “mama” somehow fed the family on $100.00 a month. I don’t know how she did it, but I still remember getting Christmas gifts from the welfare department.
Growing up in that environment doesn’t give you much of a future and I became a wild teenager. At 18 years old with hair down to my shoulders, I got in a fight with my step-dad and got kicked out of the house.
I had NO money!
Zero. Zilch. Nada!
My best friend and I bummed up $39.95 and I jumped on a Greyhound bus to Houston to live with my father who I’d met only twice in my life.
I arrived in Houston with only 25 cents in my pocket.
I became a waiter and I worked in these really high-end restaurants. Wearing a tuxedo, we made all these cool dishes at the table – Steak Diane, Caesar Salad (from scratch), Bananas Foster, Cherries Jubilee – things like that. And it was TOTALLY cool to set stuff on fire inside!
I learned a great deal about what I now call “the most outstanding service experience ever” serving high end clients.
But I always wanted my own business. I’ve always been an entrepreneur at heart. As a kid I cut grass, sold stuff door-to-door, picked up pine cones – whatever I could do to make money.
In 1984, I got married to my wife Denise Concetta Antoinette Pennella. Now, that’s Italian! I went to New Jersey to get married to my wife and while I was there a friend of the family (who was my age (23) at the time) was tooling around in a little red Mercedes convertible.
That got my attention!
I wanted to know what he did (and I wanted to know if it was legal!)
Turns out, he owned a small business. Well, when you marry into an Italian family, you don’t get wedding presents like a set of dishes, you get CASH!
We got $3,000.00 for our wedding money and I rushed back to Houston and spent all that money on starting my own service business.
My wife was really thrilled about that, let me tell you!
So, I started my business out of the trunk of my car. After struggling for 13 long years, I had 3 vehicles doing about $360k per year. And I was making about $100k profit per year. Not bad except for one thing…
I was an absolute SLAVE to my business!
If a vehicle went down I had to be involved. I had a couple of gals answering the phone but they couldn’t answer all the questions, so I had a stack of customer inquiry sheets on my desk. When I called the customer, I got their voice mail. When they called me back, they got mine.
I’ve always liked to travel and when I did, I had to be on the phone getting my crews out and talking to my customers. I used to go to Hawaii a lot and the time difference was 4 to 5 hours. So I was up at 2 o’clock in the morning getting my crews out!!!
In 1997, my life changed forever…
I learned a BIG SECRET that very few business owners even know about… much less actually implement…
I began to hear about this word called “systems” and I read a book called The E-Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber. It totally changed my life.
I took a week off and went to Destin, Florida with a stack of spiral notebooks and re-wrote my life.
I went back to Houston and began to implement…
Since that time, I built that company up to over $2.8 million per year with an average of $2.5M per year.
I don’t have big commercial contracts and I don’t even have a yellow page ad. We do very little “direct” advertising (not that I am against it – I am for anything that actually works)… and we generate an average of $50k per month in automatic referrals through my referral programs…
About 12 years ago, I began helping small business owners and showing them how to implement my systems. As it turns out, I was speaking at the same convention as Michael Gerber. He came and spoke at one of my Round Table events.
Michael and I have become good friends and have done several programs together.
